Garbh Sanskar:The Science Of Conception:Part V

Ayurvedic fertility Plan (‘Garbhadhan Samskara’):The Science Of Conception

Importance of Garbhadhan Sanskar & Genetics

An apple comes from an apple tree. Any fruit can carry only the ingredients of the tree from whence it came. At the time of pregnancy, all that took life from the parents during the nine months of gestation, whatever experiences and emotions took place in the life of the parents, have been inculcated into the unborn baby.

Think about this carefully. If a woman is treated cruelly, violated and abused during the nine months of pregnancy,  the unborn baby absorb all the negative emotions and treats she suffered,/she expressed/she feel while being treated badely? Imagine if a pregnant woman was pampered with lots of love, grace and attention during the period of pregnancy. How do you think the unborn baby would be affected?Mother after all is the sole caretaker of her child-don’t forget this.

“However in these days of impure and polluted times it is all the more important to take care of the progress of the pregnancy thus resulting into a healthy baby stepping in this world”

Pregnancy in the Hindu tradition is a very important time for a woman.

Before conception, during pregnancy and following birth, there are many Samskara performed in the Hindu tradition. “Samskara” is a term generally translated as “rite of passage”, but it can also mean,“to perfect, refine, polish, prepare, educate, cultivate and train”

Hindus believe that every aspect of life is sacred. That is why each significant stage, from conception to cremation,is celebrated as a reminder that life is a gift from God which should be duly respected and lived according to His wishes. This is the first installment describing the significance of the 16 Samskaras. Samskaras impart a higher sanctity to life.Impurities associated with the material body are eradicated by performing samskaras.

From the Mahabharat, we know that Arjun's son, Abhimanyu, learnt the secrets of battle strategy while in his mother's, Subhadra's, womb. The child devotee Prahlad of the Shrimad Bhagvatam, learnt about the glory of Lord Narayan while in his mother's, Kayadhu's, womb.

Just as a foetus can grasp good spiritual samskaras from the external world, the opposite is also true. It can definitely be affected by certain undesirable habits of the mother. Today we know that smoking, alcohol, certain medications and drugs have a detrimental effect on the foetus.

  1. Thank you. Very enlightening. Is there a source from where one could get the mantras for garbhadhana?
