Ayurveda Perinatal Nutrition Program

PRECONCEPTION, PREGNANCY AND POSTPARTUM NUTRITION’ AND ‘AYURVEDA FOR PREGNANCY AND BIRTH
During pregnancy the mother’s nutrition bears a great impact on the foetus’s growth and its future. Ayurveda lays great emphasis on ensuring holistic nutrition.A combination of Ahara (diet), Vihara (regimen), Vichara (emotions/thoughts) and Aushadha (medications) have been given great significance in Ayurveda in antenatal care called as Garbhini Paricharya.
Ayurveda conceptualized a vibrant society, which is made of healthy population. This they called as Supraja (healthy citizens). In order to achieve this eugenic goal they advocated a regime for pregnant woman, called Garbhini Paricharya (antenatal care).
“Evam Kurvati Hi Arogarogya Bbala Varnasamvahana Sampadam Upetam Jnatinam Shreshtam Apatyam Janayati” .............Charaka Samhita.
Means.....If a pregnant woman is taken care of as advised she will give birth to a child, who is without any disease, healthy, physically strong, radiant and well nourished.
Eat all SIX tastes (sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent), but emphasize sweet, sour, and salty. Examples include dairy (whole milk, butter and yogurt), sweeteners (honey and natural sugar), oils (olive oil and ghee), fruits,
vegetables, beans (mung beans or split mung dahl), spices (fennel, cumin and ginger), and nuts.
The mother should feel light, happy and satisfied after her meal. She should not feel unconliortable, have gas or pain, or feel dull. It is important to keep the fetus nourished throughout pregnancy as low birth weight may be linked to disease later in life.
Many of the health challenges of pregnancy can be prevented by paying attention to nutrition. Low blood sugar contributes to mood swings and morning sickness. Insufficient calcium contributes to hypertension, backaches and severe labor pains. Lack of nutrients also contribute to varicose veins, constipation, anemia, hemorrhoids, and skin discoloration. Pre-eclampsia can be linked to acute malnutrition.
Daily Routine Is More Important During Pregnancy.
It’s important to go to bed during the kapha time of day
(6 pm to 1O pm). It is important to wake up before the kapha time of day (6 am to 1O am). Energy, vitality and alertness are greater if waking before 6 am. Rest is especially needed in the first two months of pregnancy as well as the last two months.
