Doctors agree that some foods contain chemicals or bacteria that are dangerous to both you and your baby. They can interfere with fetal development or even cause serious infection. Even if you're already packing an alphabet's worth of vitamins and a mother lode of minerals into your daily meals, you might still worry that you're not taking in enough of the nutritional right stuff — especially if your appetite hasn't quite gotten up to speed yet, thanks to early pregnancy queasies.


Eat healthy and think healthy as it lays more impact on your baby than the other factors.

  • Plan family fitness time at least twice a week.
  • Choose activities that allow everyone to participate in.
  • Follow good exercise principles, including warming up, cooling down, and stretching.Include other family members.
  • Provide space in your yard for sports.
  • Keep fresh fruits and vegetables washed, cut up, and ready to eat for quick snacks.

If you mean better brain development in a baby, you need plenty of DHA (an essential fatty acid).

No magic food, but eat a healthy diet. Avoid high fat and processed foods. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegatables. Take a daily prenatal vitamin containing folic acid and DHA. Avoid  excess caffeine. Light to moderate exercise is also encouraged.

The growing fetus requires all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals for normal growth and development inside the womb. You as the mother are the only source of these life-giving and nurturing substances. As such, the fetus acts like a parasite and may deplete you of iron, folate, etc. important in the making of blood leading to anemia. You owe it to yourself and your baby to take your vitamins!

Prenatal vitamins help assure that nutritional deficiencies are taken care of.

Keeping a 2 to 4 day diet diary, writing down everything you eat including approximate amounts, will allow you, or a nutritionist, to make a good evaluation of the calories, protein, carbohydrate, fat and other nutrient intake.


It's also a great idea to continue your prenatal vitamins while breastfeeding.

It is important to maximize your good nutrition (and replenish what you will be losing into your breastmilk) . Be sure to eat a balanced diet and get lots of calcium as well. If you are not fond of dairy, you may need a calcium & vitamin D supplement. Also, consider ARA/DHA supplements depending on your diet as well.
