AYURVEDIC APPROACHES TO ANTENATAL CARE

Ayurvedic Approaches ( Garbhini paricharya) to Antenatal care (ANC)
Child birth is the happiest moment for the mother as she is taking care for it since nine month. Care during those nine months prefers the term Antenatal care.
Ayurvedic Antenatal Care begins with a month by month description of developments during pregnancy. It then covers the topics of apana vata, nutrition, the daily routine, yoga asana, meditation, happiness, challenges, herbs as well as herbal medicines, treatments, classical month by month regimens, herbal ghee and preparing for the baby.
Ayurveda provides significant assistance to women during pregnancy. Mothers-to-be undergo many changes to their physical and emotional being during their 9 months of pregnancy as they create and support a new life.
Ayurveda provides nutritional advice as well as practices such as meditation, the daily routine, yoga asanas, and considerations for happiness. Herbal Medicines can be used to assist the pregnant mother to feel her optimum as well as overcome challenges.
CHARAKA SAMHITA SAYS:
“Evam kurvati hi arogya – bala – varna – samvahana – sampadam upetam jnatinam shrestam apatyam jayanti “
If a pregnant woman is taken care as advised she will give birth to a child who does not have any diseases – a healthy, physically strong, radiant and well nourished Baby. He will be superior to all in the race.
1. Pregnant women must be happy, be bathed daily adorning clean clothes, remain pious, sober and worship God; should not remain erect, flexed, hold heavy weights for long and avoid excessive, laughter, shaking and trauma.
2. A woman from the very first day of pregnancy must remain happy, clean, partake in auspicious acts, be devoted to the Lord, not exposing herself to unclean, mean or abnormal sights, sounds, eat foods that are stale, dry or too moist and not remain alone in her home. She should avoid overexertion, penetrating massage, sitting on hard surfaces or places that are too high and should consume foods that are nourishing for her body and mind especially tastes which are sweet and unctuous processed with recommended herbs.
3. The pregnant woman should be protected just like a vessel filled with oil to the brim is protected, without any shaking.
4. The woman, who has conceived should be looked after affectionately by her husband and attendants, supplied with things that she likes and which are good for her health, nourished with more butter, ghee and milk, always. A monthly dietetic regimen is advocated in Ayurveda. Milk and milk derivatives (butter and ghee) are used along with honey. These fulfill the required nutrition to the growing fetes. Ayurveda considers that Milk is the total food , ghee has the virtues to help in the formation of tissues especially the nervous tissue and butter in addition to the lipid requirement supplies adequate amount of vitamin A' too.
5. Ayurvedic dietetics and energetics denote five active principles of all substances: rasa, guna, virya, vipak and prabhava. Further, there are six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent. Charaka says that the proper utilisation of these tastes maintain the body while improper uses increase the doshas.
6. Sattvic food is advised as it will create more settled state of mind necessary for the healthy pregnancy and good mental and psychological development of the fetus.
7. Good nutrition during pregnancy can help to keeping mother and baby healthy such as certain nutrients, iron, calcium, iodine and folate. Ayurvedic theories recommend easily digestible and pure foods that provide nourishment to the tissues of the fetus and the mother.
The three pillars of health from an Ayurvedic perspective are food, sleep and expense of energy. When we manage these three pillars, health is maintained in the body. During pregnancy, we pay special attention to these pillars to assure the health of the mother, and to optimize the health of the growing unborn baby within.
Self-care during pregnancy is the first gift that the mother can give to her child.
I can support these pillars, the health of the mother and the child will be optimized from the earliest moment and provide a strong foundation for the rest of the life...
