MONTH TO MONTH PREGNANCY DIET AND NUTRITION

The nine monthly diet & nutrition is unique to Ayurveda. During pregnancy the mother’s nutrition bears a great impact on the foetus growth and its future.

Ayurveda has a well-documented description of caring for pregnant women, called Garbhini Paricharya. The regimen prescribes practices for each month and stage of pregnancy.
Health of Pregnant Mother and unborn baby using Ayurveda begins with a month by month description of developments during pregnancy. It then covers the topics of nutrition, the daily routine, yoga asana, meditation, happiness, challenges, herbal medicines, herbal treatments, classical month by month regimens, herbal ghees and preparing for the baby.
During the first three months of pregnancy, the foetus is in a formative stage. During this stage, the embryo is nourished directly by upsnehan (percolation). Therefore, more liquid diets are recommended.
In the first three months of pregnancy the product of fertilization is in a fluid/jelly state and thus the woman should be given more of liquids or fluids. Also during these three months the major part of mass is formed.
Liquid diet is recommended during the first month; in the second and third months, milk medicated with life-building herbs are prescribed along with honey and ghee. Towards the end of the third month, the foetus starts showing distinct development and sensory perceptions. Motor reactions start developing and heartbeat can also be heard. The fourth month sees the formation of dhatus (tissues) in the foetus. In the fifth month, blood and muscles are formed. In the sixth month, fatty tissue is formed. In the seventh month, foetal growth is complete. Foetal organs are well formed and acquire strength by the sixth and seventh months. Skin, hair and nails are also noticed at this stage. From the fourth to the seventh month, medicinal herbal supplements are given to strengthen the uterine muscles and also to nourish the embryo.
Ayurveda advises certain decoctions during pregnancy, for the growth of the foetus and for the health of the mother.
Medicated herbal ghee is recommended as a nutritional supplement to the diet. The embryo gets its nourishment through the umbilical cord. Ghrita preparations (medicated ghee) can be taken from the first month of pregnancy, Which improves the growth of the foetus while Kalyanaka Ghritham improves mental growth. These decotions can be taken from the seventh month of pregnancy. In addition, Sukhaprasava Ghritham helps in easy delivery of the baby. These Ghrita preparations can be included as an integral part of the diet, during pregnancy.
As per Ayurveda, pregnancy is the time to consume more nutritional food. Eat all 6 tastes (sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent), but emphasize sweet, sour, and salty.
How food is eaten is just as important as what food is eaten. The mother should feel light, happy and satisfied after her meal. She should not feel uncomfortable, have gas or pain, or feel dull. Recommendations include eating the main meal at noon, waiting at least 3 hours between meals, and sitting down while eating. Also, she should taste the food, not have distractions, and avoid overeating.
Sattvic foods will build ojas. These include many of the ones previously listed but most inportantly include milk and ghee (clarified butter). Milk should be taken warmed wiili cardamom or turmeric added for better digestion. It is recommended to take it as a snack and not wiili a meal. Ghee is a nourishing, unctuous food. It promotes digestion and is digested quickly. Sattvic food is especially good for building ojas. Ghee, milk, dates, apricots, and sesame seeds are all recommended. Tamasic foods often produce ama instead of ojas.
Garbhini Paricharya – Care Of The Pregnant Woman Garbhini paricharya or antenatal care is the most important aspect in the Ayurveda. The proper garbhini Paricharya would result in the proper development of the foetus, its delivery, the health of the mother and thus her ability to withstand the strain of labour and have an eventless post-partal phase. Garbhini paricharya helps to improve physical and psychological health of pregnant women. Hence, proper garbhini paricharya and ayurvedic dietary module should be followed during pregnancy.
The garbhini paricharya is broadly discussed under three topics: 1. Maasaanumasika pathya : month wise dietary regimen and prescriptions. Month wise dietary regimen, as there is a constant development of the embryo there would also be difference in its requirements of food and nutrition. Ayurveda gives detail the month wise dietetic regimen & by following these dietetic regimens , the pregnant woman, having normal development of foetus, remains healthy and delivers a child possessing good health, energy, strength, complexion and voice. So these are recommended for the pregnant woman right from the first month upto the ninth month of pregnancy.
2. Garbhasthaapaka dravyaas : Substances which are beneficial to pregnancy.
3. Garbhopaghaathakara bhaavas : Activities and substances that are harmful to pregnancy.
According to Ayurveda to have normal delivery it is very important that we maintain the vata and due to this reason we find that towards the last few months of delivery & all efforts are taken to keep the vata in an unvitiated state, which plays an important role in the delivery. Vata must be kept in balance during pregnancy. It is the downward moving flow of energy in the body and must not be too strong or too weak. Most ayurvedic recommendations will be to balance apana vata. An emotional disturbance that can be caused by excess vata is anxiety. Foods, rest, and oil massage will be prescribed in order to restore balance. The apana vata is key to maintaining the pregnancy as well as birthing the baby at the time of
labor.
Pregnant woman's mind should be always in a pleasant state and she should neither touch nor see unpleasant things of disfigured persons (with some physical defects), scary objects, nor listen to exciting and scary stories. It is said that the mental state of the mother can influence the outcome of pregnancy as well as the child to be born.
It is important to keep the fetus nourished throughout pregnancy.

KARMA AND AYURVEDA IN PREGNANCY

Charaka Samhita discusses the role of karma as a determinant of the qualities and personality of the individual, lifespan, etiology of illness, and otherwise personality of the individual, lifespan, etiology of illness, and otherwise incomprehensible epidemics. The Classical texts of Ayurveda also consider the influence of karma in concerned with development of the embryo during gestations and the process of its becoming a person with a distinct personality. Ayurveda believes that Atma(soul) and Panchamahabhutas are equally important factors for conception with union of Shukra(sperm) and Shonita(ovum). The union of Sukra(sperm) and Sonita(ovum) along with Atma(soul) in Garbhashaya(uterus) is termed as Garbha(embryo/fetus). It is formed as a result of combination of Panchamahabhutas(five elements) and Chetana(soul). Panchamahabhutas(five elements) play an important role in growth of embryo/fetus. Sushruta explains the formation of Garbha(embryo/fetus) as the combination of Sukra(sperm), Sonita(ovum), Atma(soul), Ashtaprakrutis(8 prakrutis) and Shodasha vikaras(16 Vikaras) in Garbhashaya(uterus). Garbha(embryo/fetus) formation takes place only by the suitable combination of four factors responsible for the formation of embryo/fetus)such as Rtu(period), Kshetra(place of conception), Ambu(nutrition) and Bija(gametes). Six factors are responsible for the proper development of embryo are Matruja, Pitruja, Atmaja, Satmyaja, Rasaja and Satwaja(factors derived from mother, father, soul, wholesomeness, nutrition, psyche). Development of embryo/fetus) takes place by Rasa(nutrition) and Adhmana(inflation) of Vayu(air). The place of fire is said to be inside the Nabhi(umbilicus). Vayu(air) blows it by which the body of embryo/fetus) grows and attains development. Vayu(air) along with Agni(fire) demarcates and dilates channels in all directions. Shusruta has mentioned specific function for each Bhutha(element). Prithvi(earth) does Samhanana(compactness), Jala(water) Kledana(moistens), Teja(fire) Pachana(digests), by its specific function provides general shape, Vayu(air) does Vibhajana(division) of body parts and Akasha(ether) Vivardhana(increases); it also provides space to Srotases(channels). Charaka considers the influence of the parents in some detail which offers elaborate instructions intended to help a couple achieve pregnancy and impede obstacles to it. Reciting mantras will help a woman achieve pregnancy and bear a child with desirable qualities. Charaka recommends various other rituals and procedures reminiscent of Dharmasastra. Among the factors determining the childs character (sattva), Ayurveda refers to karma. Other determinants include activities of the expectant mother, as we have indicated, personalities of both parents, what is heard by the woman at the moment of conception and several other factors Actions of the father prior to conception influence the offspring through their effects on the father’s semen. According to the theory of conception articulated in the body section of the Ayurvedic texts, a viable embryo (garbha) results from the successful union of semen and menstrual blood etc. Blood, fat, heart, lungs and other vital organs derive from maternal contributions; from the father come hair, beard, nails, teeth and muscle. The fact of arising in a particular womb, life span, intellect, instinct, emotion and a sense of self are each governed by the atman. A viable embryo must have five constituents, without which the development of the fetus cannot proceed. Contributions from the mother and father nutrients individual self (atman) through which the influence of karma is manifest, and a constitutional integrity (satmya) binding these together, which is responsible for health, clarity and virility. Sattva specifies an individual’s intellectual and emotional character, and it arises spontaneously from atman in a given birth and departs at death. it also influences the manifestations of atman in the next birth. Charaka identifies sattva as the essential determinant of an individual’s particular personality traits. Karma is primarily a property of atman, but it also mediates other manifestations of atman and is associated with sativa. Caraka Samhita discusses three classes of sattva: pure (sudha), impassioned (rajasa) and foolish (tamasa), and from these three proceed a variety of personality types. Character types under the sudha class are named after deities. Brahama personality is pure, truthful, wise and free of passions. Rishi (sage) type is devoted to sacrifices, study, vows and similar concerns. The Indra personality is powerful, acquisitive, virile and concerned with his possessions and pleasures. AYURVEDIC CARE DURING PREGNANCY FOR A MAGICAL BEGINNING

Ayurveda creates support for the physical, mental/emotional and spiritual bodies of the mother and her baby.
Ayurveda places an enormous emphasis on the importance of caring for the mother before, during, and after pregnancy. Ayurveda prescribes specific nutritional measures for the growth and protection of the woman to keep her vital and pure.
Dinacharya (daily regimen) and Rutucharya (regimen for each season) have been described to keep the Doshas in balance and in tune with the changes in nature. If these are followed chances of vitiation of the Doshas are minimal. Following the regimen conducive to one's constitution, not only keeps the body healthy, it ensures to an extent a trouble free pregnancy and smooth labour. For instance, certain seasons are more troublesome for women during pregnancy than others due to increase in Pitta and Vata Doshas respectively. A woman of Pitta and Vata or both Prakriti needs to be more aware of this. Ayurveda offers many such fascinating and preventive insights for women during pregnancy.
The concept of Agni is very relevant in pregnancy which leads to the formation of a healthy Rasa Dhatu, the first of the seven body tissues, which nourishes the entire body and from which ovum is formed. This Rasa is responsible for the nourishment of the foetus, its tissues, its sense organs as well as its Dosha, Dhatu, Malas. The ovum is a part of a product of Rasa, which consists of pure, clear Rasa Dhatu deposited inside the uterus every month. This process starts immediately after menstruation. The inner wall of the uterus keeps getting lined by the Rasa for a period of about 14 days. If at the end of this period, conception has not taken place, if the fertilised ovum has not embedded itself in this layer of Rasa, it is broken down and is converted to menstrual fluid. This Rasa provides support for the foetus. If it is impure it cannot carry out either function, of supporting the foetus or preparing the ovum. In women impurities of Rasa Dhatu are often the cause of infertility. Conditions like PCOD can be attributed to impurities of Rasa.According to ayurveda, couple are given a pre-conception diet with these respective substances to enhance the qualities of the respective tissues..
Unhealthy Agni leads to formation of Ama(toxines), a heavy, sticky and dense substance which is like a poisonous toxin in capable of sustaining life as well as responsible for abortions due to presence of severe indigestion and Ama. Ama also increases the risk of potentially life threatening embolisms. Thats why i always asked couple for Panchakarma procedure to purify the body before conception & healthy Agni. Holistic care relating to pregnancy becomes essential as soon as the mother and father even decide to embark on the journey of parenthood—before conception even takes place.
In Ayurvedic management of pregnancy each woman is screened for signs of vitiated Vata, and it can be pacified through diet, medicines and cleansing regimens(Panchakarma), vata is pacified well in advance. So preventing vitiation, increase or decrease in Vata is of the utmost importance in the pregnant women. All kinds of problems related to pregnancy come under the purview of Vata Dosha. Women who are given therapies for management of Vata have surprisingly easy pregnancies and deliveries compared to those who did not.
Ayurvedic care for mother and child involves herbs and food for 1 to 9 month of pregnancy & some cleansing therapies. Ayurveda has a well-documented description of caring for pregnant women, called Garbhini Paricharya. In Ayurveda antenatal care is called as Garbhini Paricharya. The regimen prescribes practices for each month and stage of pregnancy. Garbhini Paricharya prescribes ahara (diet), vihara (lifestyle) and vichara (thought process) to be followed during pregnancy as these have a direct effect on the mother and unborn baby. Great care is also recommended during the first three months and after the completion of the seventh month of pregnancy.
During the first three months of pregnancy, the foetus is in a formative stage. During this stage, the embryo is nourished directly by upsnehan (percolation). Therefore, more liquid diets are recommended.
The embryo gets its nourishment through the umbilical cord. In the eighth Month Ojas moves back and forth between mother and baby. The mother may experience a wavering feeling of sorrow and joy due to this movement. The unsteadiness of the ojas makes delivery during this month dangerous. Ojas does not remain stable and birth at this time isn’t safe. The essence of all the dhatus is called the ojas. The ojas is responsible for the life to be sustained and is also the source for the internal strength and resistance power. Ojas is initial essence of embryo. Eight month, in the eighth month it would not be out of place to mention the role of vata in the process of delivery and how important it is to maintain it. We see that the regimen and diet prescribed are of the nature of controlling vata especially the apaana Vaayu. The functions of apaana Vaayu are i.e. the expulsion of gas, faeces, urine, shukra (semen), aartava (menstrual discharge) and the delivery of the foetus. Hence to have normal delivery it is very important that we maintain the vata and due to this reason we find that towards the last few months of delivery, all efforts are taken to keep the vata in an unvitiated state. As has been said earlier vata plays an important role in the delivery of the garbha – thus care is taken to maintain it.
Ojas is the essence of the body responsible for strength, natural resistance and is considered essential for life - says the Astanga Hridayam, a classic Ayurvedic text. It is said to be present in the heart. Its presence in the fetus and mother produce strength and contentment, and its absence fatigue and anxiety.” Almost every classical Ayurvedic text talks about how ojas moves from the mother to the fetus and from the fetus to the mother in the eighth month. Because of this transfer, it is said that the mother and fetus alternately become happy and energetic when ojas is strong, then fatigued and anxious when ojas is weak. The instability of ojas makes it an unfavorable time to give birth, both for the mother and for the baby’s health.
Every thought, action, and decision a pregnant mother makes is directly correlated to the health, vitality, and essentially, the life potential of unborn baby.

Role of Diet and Nutrition in Pregnancy – An Ayurvedic Perspective
Month wise dietary regimen as there is a constant development of the embryo there would also be difference in its requirements of food and nutrition. Thus the requirements of the mother also change. Having understood this change in requirements, Ayurveda gives detail the month wise dietetic regimen. By following these dietetic regimens prescribed, the pregnant woman, having normal development of foetus, remains healthy and delivers a child possessing good health, energy, strength, complexion and voice. The child would also be sturdy. They are recommended for the pregnant woman right from the first month upto the ninth month of pregnancy.
Ayurvedic text states that, “If a pot filled with oil right up to the brim is to be carried without spilling even a single drop, every step has to be taken with care”,
The food is consumed by the pregnant woman, the same become congenial to the foetus, thus diet should be taken considering place of living, time or season and digestive capacity.
Milk and ghee stand out as the most common in the pregnant diet that Ayurveda advises. The idea of this is to provide optimum amount of protein and fat to the body. In addition, it provides right amount of calcium and vitamins for the pregnant mother helping in sustaining a comfortable lactation. Of these, wholesome diet is given great importance as it aids foetal growth and maternal health.
Garbhini Paricharya prescribes ahara (diet), vihara (lifestyle) and vichara (thought process) to be followed during pregnancy as these have a direct effect on the mother and the child.
During the first three months of pregnancy, the foetus is in a formative stage. During this stage, the embryo is nourished directly by upsnehan (percolation). Therefore, more liquid diets and a light diet is recommended during the first month; in the second and third months, milk medicated with life-building herbs are prescribed along with honey and ghee. Herbs helps in calming the nerves and is also a good prajasthapan (sustainer of pregnancy). Ayurveda is particular that pregnant women should not get constipation. While mild laxatives and enema is recommended if there is a tendency to constipation, it is found that usually, milk alone is sufficient to cope with the constipation. Medicated ghee is recommended as a nutritional supplement to the diet. The embryo gets its nourishment through the umbilical cord. Rice, milk, butter and ghee along with fruits and leafy vegetables are recommended. This is useful for foetal growth, for maternal health and for further lactation.
As per Ayurveda, pregnancy is the time to consume nutritional food substances. From the fourth to the seventh month, ayurvedic medicinal supplements required along with herbs which given to strengthen the uterine muscles and also to nourish the embryo. These also help in the prevention of intrauterine growth retardation. Fat, salt and water should be reduced in the diet from the seventh month onwards. Rice with ghee is a recommended diet. Small amounts of basil can be taken as antispasmodic. Few Herbs which are mild diuretics and urinary antiseptics, can also be taken. Ayurveda advises certain decoctions during pregnancy, for the growth of the foetus and for the health of the mother. Ghrita preparations (medicated ghee) can be taken from the first month of pregnancy which improves the growth of the foetus & improves mental growth as well helps in easy delivery of the baby.. These decotions can be taken from the seventh month of pregnancy. These Ghrita preparations can be included as an integral part of the diet, during pregnancy. Ayurvedic diet correlates to modern nutrition recommended for pregnant women such as high protein, vitamins and minerals.
The proper Garbhini paricharya would result in the proper development of the foetus, its delivery, the health of the mother and thus her ability to withstand the strain of labour and have an eventless post-partal phase. The care of the pregnant woman reflects on the quality and health of the offspring. For these reasons our Ayurveda texts have given a detailed and systematic and month wise regimen plus a list of do’s and dont’s to be followed in the antenatal phase.
Ayurveda gives detail the month wise dietetic regimen. By following these dietetic regimens prescribed, the pregnant woman, having normal development of foetus, remains healthy and delivers a child possessing good health, energy, strength, complexion and voice. They are recommended for the pregnant woman right from the first month upto the ninth month of pregnancy.

PREGNANCY : WHY SHOULD AYURVDIC PRINCIPLES HAVE TO FOLLOW?

Ayurveda takes a very holistic view of pregnancy and childbirth.

Now-a-day due to competitive life, the advance generation desire only one child and willing that their child should be physically, mentally& intellectually stronger.
Pregnancy should be by choice, not by accident.
But now a days in stressful society couples give more importance to carrier than family and so not paying attention towards proper marital age, sex timing, dincharya & rutucharya. As a result they are more prone to physical & psychological problems.
It is time to revitalize the ancient methods of Ayurveda of health care to incorporate its benefits for the mankind.
All the classical texts have mentioned keen descriptions about reproductory age, rutukal, dincharya, rutucharya. Yogabhyas, panchkarma, pranayam, aahar vihar, aacharrasayan, counseling, meditation, positive thinking & garbhini paricharya i.e., regimen according to Ayurveda from 1st to 9th month of pregnancy, which helps to reduce the risk of adverse health effect on women, foetus & risk of hereditary diseases in next generation, means easy delivery at proper time, desired healthy child possing all the qualities with long life. Rules of Ahara (diet), Vihara (lifestyle), Sadavrutta (moral conduct), along with varied therapies are used in dealing the various problems. Uses of various Ayurvedic formulations like various ghrtas and tailas (ghees and oils) have given wonderful results. Ayurveda aims at producing “Supraja” or healthy progeny. Ayurveda provides answers to some of the most worrying problems facing today. All this in depth analysis is for the process of creating “Supraja” – healthy happy children with superior intellect, strong immune systems and a sound moral and spiritual base.
It's almost a holy process where the mental-spiritual apparatus is just as important as the physical one. Ayurveda describes the Garbha (foetus) as an amalgam of various factors: maternal, paternal, mental, dietary, and factors agreeable to the body and soul.
I believe that Ayurveda was never more relevant than it is today. Ayurveda is not only medicine system but it is holistic way of life. It takes care of all aspects of human wellbeing i.e., physical, mental and spiritual. According to Ayurvedic principles for healthy progeny, the couple must need to have proper care before conception as well as during pregnancy which prepares them physically as well as mentally.
Before conception the couple has to detoxifies the body with Panchakarma therapies which detoxifies the body, maintain the dosha, dhatu & mala to prevent disease & also promotes resistance to outside pathogens & prepare the uterus for a healthy conception. After proper purification the couple should be advised to follow saatvic diet of organic, whole foods for 3 months prior to conception. After taking all the above measures at least for 3-4 months, the couple is capable of producing ideal progeny.
The regimen followed during pre-pregnancy period to achieve conception is called Garbhadhan vidhi.
Ayurveda gives great importance for the preconception care & garbhini paricharya.
Garbhasanskar is a process to achieve Physical, Mental, Spiritual, Emotional, Social development & Perfection for the mother & unborn baby. It is complete pregnancy care guideline to get a divine child. It preparesthe couple to welcome a new life & to contribute towards healthy society.
Chanting Mantras during pregnancy to Fetus stimulates the fetal activity. Causes mental & physical relaxation. Baby distinctly recognizes musical sound that he heard in the womb. Specific mantras heard by the foetus in womb provides strong foundation for later learning, behavior & clear pronunciation the rhythmic tone of mantras.
Ayurveda is more about prevention rather than cure. The factors which constitute good health, i.e. balanced Doshas, healthy dhatus and proper Malas, optimally functioning sense organs, a happy contented soul and a balanced mind are the very factors that go towards a smooth pregnancy, labour and healthy progeny.

The concept of Agni is very important in pregnancy. It leads to the formation of a healthy Rasa Dhatu, the first of the seven body tissues, which nourishes the entire body and from which the ovum is formed. The ovum is a part of Artava (a product of Rasa). Artava consists of pure, clear Rasa Dhatu which is deposited inside the uterus every month. Conditions like PCOD can be attributed to impurities of Rasa. Since Artava is very similar to sesame oil (and Shukra or semen is similar to ghee) both parents are given a pre-conception diet with these respective substances to enhance the qualities of the respective tissues. Rasa is responsible for the nourishment of the foetus, its tissues, its sense organs as well as its Dosha, Dhatu, Malas.
Another important preventive factor is the role of Manas or
mind. Negativity, stress, anger, envy etc all these strong negative emotions affect appetite, digestion and therefore formation of Rasa Dhatu.
Vata Dosha is of the utmost importance in the pregnant woman. All kinds of problems like pregnancy loss, ectopic pregnancy, haemorrhage, eclampsia, difficult labour, etc come under the purview of Vata Dosha. I have seen that women who are given therapies for management of Vata have surprisingly easy pregnancies and deliveries compared to those who did not. Through diet, medicines and-cleansing regimens, vata is pacified well in advance.
According to Ayurveda mother and child care involves herbs and food for each month of pregnancy, adding some cleansing therapies as well. But there is more to it. The minds of both the parents should be free of any negative emotions. Their state of mind should be happy & free of stress. It is found that negativity between the parents especially at the time of conception can cause many problems. For e.g. conception may not take place, or the child may have many congenital problems or may not live to be born full term i.e. the chances of miscarriages are increased.
Pregnancy creates changes in a woman's body. This is a time of heightened activity of Vata, the most destructive of all the Doshas. Snehana (lubrication – both internal and external again for regulation of Vata as well as nourishment of the mother and child). According to Ayurveda there are many formulations that prove beneficial to the mother.
As said above Snehana as very important in both antenatal and postnatal care. It is also recommended for the newborn indeed one of the first therapies for a newborn baby is Snehana or Abhyanga. Since there is such a heightened amount of Vata activity in the pregnant body that Snehana becomes of paramount importance. Correction of Vata takes precedence over all other problems in the pregnancy. We found that the woman who followed regular Snehana had less complications of pregnancy, recovered faster from child birth i.e. suffered less and most importantly tended to have a natural childbirth as it could be like nothing short of miracle.
I have given my experience with some of the popular ones which are widely used and which continue to give amazing results with their efficacy.
So, it's very important to plan your pregnancy before three months. It should not be an accidental.
